Their own keys

funkeys.JPGBabies love keys, mobile phones and remote controls, that’s a fact. It’s so easy to hand them one of these objects when they start crying in the least convenient places: when you are in a changing room trying on a nice dress that you absolutely need for that evening, when you are queueing at the post office or when you are finally having a cappuccino with your girlfriends! So you hand them your keys and the baby stays quiet, and you forget all about it.  You remember it only once you get home and cannot find the keys in your messy handbag or when you decide to make a phone call. If you are lucky you find it at the bottom of the pushchair, behind your baby and covered in crumbs!

There are, of course, toys that replicate these objects, but every kid from a very young age can tell the difference between the real thing and a fake!

So to avoid loosing my house keys I decided to give my son (and now my daughter) their own set of keys. Instead of using old ones I went to the locksmith and bought a few coloured keys, a name tag and a carabiner. There you go, it was even an instructive toy for when my son started learning colours.
Needless to say, we never lost those keys!

I was in the supermarket the other day when my 7-month old started having a little episode shall we say, so I gave him my mobile phone to play with. It kept him quiet for the duration of the shopping trip however he drooled over the keypad so much that he actually broke the phone. Thankfully I had just ordered a new phone anyway, so now I can keep the old one especially for him!

A really goood idea! I’ll try to do it and maybe I’ll add a big colour bell ;)

What a wonderful idea. I am always worried our toddler will loose our keys if we let her play with them.

This is a wonderful idea….we have the big clunky Parents keys, but they’re obviously fake and aren’t nearly as attractive as my keys. Since my car has a remote door lock/unlock I don’t want my daughter chewing on the electronics (she’s already broken a cell phone w/drool). Thanks for the suggestion!! We’re off to the locksmith ourselves. :)

that’s a good idea, especially because my little Camilla has a love affair with my new i-phone…. and she loves make things fall from the table…

Oh my gosh, what a clever idea! I need to unlock 4 locks to get into my apartment and my poor baby girl starts freaking out from the moment I get my keys out at door number one all the way through the lobby and the elevator until we get to lock number four. A set of keys for her to call her own is just what she needs!

keep in mind that used keys contain a lot of lead, which goes straight into baby’s system when she chews on them. i’m not sure if using new keys solves the problem…
