Potato Stamp
June 16, 2008
I was caught short the other day when it started bucketing down with rain and I could not imagine anything less appealing than taking the kids to the playground. So what could I do to keep them busy and stop them from going crazy being locked in a flat for a whole day?
I had run out of play dough, read all the books I could read and had already exhausted the crayon option… Then I suddenly remembered my mother making us potato stamps when we were kids! It was an instant hit. Half a potato and some rough carving later produced a stamp that fit perfectly into my daughter’s hand, and she and her friend spent hours stamping every possible piece of paper I could find!

What a wonderful flash to past! As a child, I would beg my mother to let me have just 1 potato each time she made mash so that I could make potato art!! I remember my mother would get creative and also use apples and turnips if she was desperate to entertain me!
Believe it or not, but I’ve actually seen Country Living magazine (USA ediion) using potatoes to create vintage feeling stamps to punching along the wall as a border for kitchen decor as well!

I’ve never heard of this!!! How fun!! I’m wishing I had some potatoes lying around. Maybe I’ll take the Antiques Diva’s advice and use an apple!
How clever!
