Saltwater sandals
July 17th, 2009
Growing up in Seattle, we spent every summer on the salty, rocky beaches of the Puget Sound… running around in our Saltwater sandals! Every summer we got a new pair — I can still remember choosing the color. Saltwater sandals are made to stand up even in salt water (hence the name) — you can get them wet, and they’ll still survive. They’re made with a flexible, high grade sole, and durable leather straps. (Apparently, according to Wikipedia, they were first produced in the 1940s as an alternative to traditional children’s leather sandals as a way to cope with leather shortages in World War II. The sandals were made from scrap leather left over from making men’s shoes.)
They are so simple, yet so cute! Nothing makes me think ’summer’ more than a pair of Saltwater sandals…
The infant sandals are on sale at online children’s boutique, Sweet William. And did you know they also come in grown-up sizes? I’m thinking about getting myself a pair! (Grown-up version available here.)

How funny, I have never heard of these before! I don’t think they exist in Europe!

Yes, I think they are a very American novelty!!! I’ve never seen them here in Europe!
You would like them though — and they’re not very expensive!!

I love it! I too grew up in Seattle and now live in London. It has been ages since I heard about Saltwater sandals! You are so right, thanks for reminding me. We are heading over there at the end of Aug and I’m just going to have to start the tradition with my 8 mos old early! Thanks!

They are so stylish, much better than Crocs!
I wrote about them on my blog a while ago, in Europe you can only buy them on Ebay. The grown-up ones are also very nice!

I love these shoes; I discovered them on some US blogs. After tracking down a supplier who would send them to the UK I ordered some for our daughter. She too loves them and wears them whenever she can.

Maraka, would you share the name of that supplier? I live in Denmark and would love to get some for my kids!
