The things kids come up with…

Courtney recently wrote a post about the cute things kids say… but what about the things kids say that put you in a tight spot?
Our household has been hit by the chicken pox virus, both our girls have been covered in spots. A couple of days ago we finally managed to venture out and were happily sitting on the metro when my daughter exclaimed in a voice that could be heard for miles: “Mommy, that lady over there has got chicken pox, she needs to go to the doctor and get fixed!” I looked over at the lady she was pointing at (as did the rest of the carriage). The lady in question must have had some acne as a teenager and had slightly pocked skin. Nothing shocking, but definitely something that she would have been aware of herself and did not need a two-year-old to point out! And the 2-year-old just kept on going, “Lady! Lady! You there: Lady! You have got chicken pox! You need to go to the doctor and be fixed!!!”
Luckily the lady in question thought she was being funny and laughed, but we were really lucky to fall on someone with a sense of humour, or else I really wouldn’t have known what to do! To be fair my daughter actually thought she was being genuinely helpful, but lets face it, it was a really, really inappropriate thing to say. I have tried to explain that to her, but I am not sure if it really did compute…..

eeh…yikes. uncomfortable. Just this weekend our son announced to my mother-in-law, brother-in-law and his wife that “mommy and Daddy were frustrated with each other this morning”. Oh well, what are you going to do?

I know what you mean!! My daughter(shes 2) calls her Uncle Hector, Uncle Icky…(we all call him Heci, and her traslation is Icky..as well as my son) He is hispanic. Well, my daughter a couple months ago was shopping with me, and we were looking at clothes. No big deal, right? There was a fairly large hispanic family shopping as well, with a few men in the mix. It was upon seeing the men that my daughter starts yelling, “Look mommy! It’s Icky!! Hi Icky!” I turned sooooo red, and quickly said, “oh no honey, thats not UNCLE Icky….” sooooo embarassed!!!! How do you explain that to a 2 year old!?!

my 3-year-old once said, while looking at a schoolfriend’s granny, “mum, she’s old, isn’t she?”, I said “she’s alessia’s granny”, he insisted “yes, but she is old!”
and once in the mountains, to a very fat man who was telling him how cute he was and how clever hiker he must have been he just said ” why are you so fat?”
totally embarassing!

I once had a very similar thing happen to me as a teenager. I was mortified and carried that mortification with me for years. I had bad acne and up to that point had faked confidence. Where my friends tried to tell me it wasn’t bad to help boost my esteem, it took one honest child (out of the mouth of babes) to tear it down. I smiled and laughed my way through it too. What other response is there?
