Graboski the mole

graboski.jpgYesterday we picked this book in our local bookstore mostly because of the funny name, ‘Graboski’.  Graboski is a cute mole that lives beneath a field where cows peacefully graze all day long. His main activity is digging tunnels and leaving little mountains of soil on the grass. But one day he is disturbed by men making holes in his field; diggers and excavators arrive, skyscrapers and an underground parking unit will be built over his land. He decides to leave, and after a few days of traveling he reaches another uncontaminated field, where he can smell the grass and fresh air and he can start his peaceful life all over again.

Very nice story, I thought. Perfectly in line with the latest eco-trend. But you know what? This book was written in 1972! It was written in German by Luis Murschetz, and it has been translated to 13 languages over the years.  So it is apparently a classic, but it was only published in Italy in 2007.

Hmmm… Difficult. Of course I feel for the mole who has to leave his peaceful house, but the architect in me thinks a skyscraper with an underground parking can be really cool too…!
I don’t think this book has been translated in Dutch or English, but it sound like a super cute story!
