Why?
It’s official now, my 3-year-old has officially entered the WHY phase. I’ve known about this famous phase for a long time now, possibly even since I was a kid myself. It always seemed like so much fun to me – how great is it that children are so curious and eager to learn, and what a challenge for parents to come up with the answers and educate their kids!!!
Yeah – right.
The entire, entire, entire day, after everything that is said, my daughter religiously asks ‘Why?’ And even though I try my best to give her the best possible answers, she just doesn’t give up!
Example (in the car):
-Mummy, where are we going?
We’re taking you to school.
-Why?
Because it’s fun for you to play with your little friends!
-Why?
(ignoring her)
-Why?
(ignoring her)
-Whyyyy, mummy?
(Thinking she might have forgotten the original question) Why what, honey?
-Why is it fun for me to play with my little friends?
Other example (yesterday at dinnertime):
-Is that white?
Yes, that is white wine.
-Why?
Because we are eating fish.
-Why?
White wine is better with fish, while red wine is a better match with meat.
-Why?
Anyway, I don’t really know what to say about this – just wanted to share… Don’t know if I should laugh or cry!

Ha! I’m laughing as we’re in it too. It’s just ocurred to me in the last two weeks that we’re in it…all of sudden lots of “why” and “when?” It is somewhat annoying but on the flip side, it’s cool because 3 yo’s are just starting to put things together, intellectually, and it’s fun to watch. I love the conversations we have! It’s just tiring to come up with clever answers when you are dog tired that’s tricky.
we have been in the “why” phase for a few months now…. it is tiring indeed!
So have we? It will drive me to drink! Esp. now that we have been on holiday in Italian, my daughter can ask why now in French, English and Italian! I am serious, it is actually one of the few Italian words she managed to picked up!
SO ARE WE!!!!! It’s cute that he’s so interested, but sometimes I think that he’s just on autopilot to respond with “why?”. It’s just an automatic response now….
And yes… annoying indeed!
But I’m glad you’re all going through it as well!
Try this, moms! What I love to do is ask “Why?” right back. Sometimes it throws my 3-year old son a curve, but usually he knows the answer. Or else he says something quite funny.
